Adália Francisco Tivane just received seeds from the Mozambique Red Cross and is eager to plant them. Her two-year-old grandson, Chelton Tivane, is one of many children in Changanine, in Mozambique’s Chibuto District, who has been surviving on local berries and plants in the absence of food and water.

“We have nothing to eat so we cut some branches off the trees that have little fruits. Then we boil cattle skin and strain it, and the liquid that comes out is mixed with the Tilharru fruit. We only eat this because we’re hungry. We only eat this to survive. After a while we got used to its taste. But we don’t eat it for the taste, it’s really to stop the hunger.

The distributions here by the Mozambique Red Cross are keeping us afloat. Those who receive are able to help others who haven’t received anything. As soon as the rain comes, we will plant the seeds that we received from the Red Cross and our lives will get better.”
