A boy sits at the front of his damaged home after Typhoon Haima hit the municipality of San Pablo in the province of Isabela, northern Philippines on 20 October 20, 2016. Strong winds brought by Typhoon Haima toppled down electric posts, damaged houses and flooded corn fields in Isabela and Cagayan provinces, areas hardest-hit by Typhoon Haima.

Super Typhoon Haima made landfall in the Philippines in the night of Wednesday 19 October, bringing torrential rain and winds of 225kph with gusts of 315kph to vulnerable communities across Central Luzon. It is estimated that around one million families lie within the 100-kilometre radius of the typhoon’s track, and the damage is expected to be extensive.

Volunteers and staff of the Philippine Red Cross, supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and other partners, are hard at work assessing the damage across the island. They are also serving hot meals and providing support and care in evacuation centres, where tens of thousands of people are now staying after being evacuated pre-emptively to get them out of harm’s way.
